Public Holiday Pay

Public holidays that fall on working days are automatically paid according to German labor law (§ 2 EFZG). This applies to public holidays in the employee's federal state.

This is a legal requirement and cannot be disabled.

Legal notes & tips

Leave Entitlement Rules (BUrlG)

  • Minimum 4 weeks (20 working days for 5-day week) annual leave
  • Full entitlement after 6 months of employment
  • First 6 months: 1/12 entitlement accrues per month
  • Unused leave at contract end must be paid out

Sick Pay & Public Holiday Rules

  • Continued pay for up to 6 weeks per illness (EFZG)
  • Medical certificate typically required from 4th day
  • Employer can require certificate from 1st day if justified
  • Public holidays on working days must be paid (§ 2 EFZG)
  • After 6 weeks sick leave, health insurance pays sickness benefit
